GUB like US

Posted by Ruby Wright in ,

Since I first became a blogger I had 3 goals in mind with starting a blog:
1- share the kids lives with family who is far from us since we were a military family.
2- Find others to relate to who had Blackxican Families or who were Blackxican.
3- Share our story with the world.

Since starting Growing Up Blackxican almost 2 years ago, I've had a bigger goal in mind. I have came in contact with many Blackxican families to relate to and learn from. I have shared our lives and now it's time I share those lovely families and individuals with you with a new project.

I decided to create a project called GUB Like Us (GUB standing for Growing up Blackxican)
A project that will feature Blackxican Families and Individuals once a month.

GUB like US will create awareness for other Blackxican Families or any other bicultural families that can relate to the different situations we face. From raising and parenting bicultural children to being in a interracial relationship. We've all dealt with having to balance, compromise and learn from each other. Everyones story is different and I'm always up for hearing it.

It's important to find someone to relate to. Though being different is great also there is always someone who may not feel the same and just need to feel like they fit. I know I've felt like that.

I know the battles between your traditions and someone elses vs what your families think is best can cause a strain on your family. You are not alone, many of us have already dealt with a lot of what you may have gone thru.

I hope you enjoy this new part of GUB. We are set to debut tomorrow, Friday, July 1st!

If you are also a Blackxican Family/individual who would like to share your story Contact us at growingupblackxican@gmail.com We would love to hear from you!

Happy Thursday Everyone!

Book wish list

Posted by Ruby Wright in , , , ,

After cleaning and organizing the kids play area this weekend I found myself shaking my head at all the crappy books we have for them. I decided we are going to buy books with meanings from now on. Books that the kids could relate to in some way or that dad and I enjoyed as kids. I don't want our library to be filled of just cartoon character books. There should be some educational and cultural books involved too. This is the list of books we wish to add to our library.

Book wish list
1 chicka chicka boom boom by Bill Martin Jr and John Archambault
2 como es tu mama? By Rosanela Alvarez
3 De Colores by David Diaz
4 The Colors of Us by Karen Katz
5 Playing Loteria by Rene Colato Lainez and Jill Arena
6 Tortillitas Para Mama by Margot Griego, Betsy Bucks, Sharon Gilbert, and Laural Kimball
7 He’s Got the whole world in his hands by Kadir Nelson
8 The Very Hungry Caterpillar By Eric Carle
9 Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman

Survived the Theater with toddlers

Posted by Ruby Wright in , ,

We have survived our first movie as a family at the theater! Well kinda… First we ended up picking a really bad time to go to the movies. We chose the noon showing on a Saturday. It was not only full but it was also little man and little lady’s nap time. Thank goodness for all the snacks we bought popcorn is always a favorite and I did spoil them with some M&Ms. Little man and I used them to learn colors while the previews were on which might I add take twice as long in a kids movie. There were some technical difficulties with starting the movie on time it was actually 10mins late. Many kids grew restless fast. I almost threw the towel in and just walked out. Little man was actually really good and enjoyed the whole experience. Little lady well, she was over the movie 30mins into it. She kept trying to talk to the kids behind her. She demanded more “pacorn” and even managed to drop our water on the floor. She kept going from her seat to hub's or my lap. The last 20 minutes of the movie she managed to fall asleep in my arms which was perfect.

Unfortunately The hubs and I feel the movie was not so great. As I mentioned we were so excited to see Cars2. The kids had been raving about the movie and were huge fans of the first one. The movie was OK. I mean it was cool for adults but for the kiddos not so much. There was a lot of guns, and violence. The hubs especially is very anti guns and violent stuff in the house since he grew up the same. The part I disliked the most is where they used ships that looked like NAVY SHIPS and the ships played bad guys. You know this raised my eye brow because we are an ex-navy family. I just felt it could have been any other ship. I know any navy child would have spotted that as daddy or mommy's ship. The details were pretty head on. Though the ships were just a small part of the movie and I'm probably being over sensitive about it, I'm not sure if I'll be purchasing it when it comes out DVD. Overall it was an OK movie but I would have preferred a cute story instead of the action and violence.

PS. I failed to document the kids 1st movie with a picture because our phones are useless in the dark. Maybe next time I'll bring my camera with me.

Also, we are off to the shore with some friends I'll update on our outing later this week.

Happy Monday everyone!

Taking toddlers to the movies

Posted by Ruby Wright in , , , , ,

Cars2 is out today!!!!!
This is a huge deal. You see, it's been about 2 months that every time we see anything cars related including the movie preview on TV the kids go wild. They yell out "CARZZZZZ"

It's no surprise that little man loves Cars he's loved them since we lived in California. He has plushies, actual cars and ever apparel- the boy has been spoiled. However, over the past weeks or so little lady has showed some interest too. Initially we had planned to only take little man to the movies. We thought Cars would be perfect for his 1st time at the theater. Little lady was to stay at grandma's. I feel guilty though since they do everything together.

My question now is, Do you think an almost 3 and 2 year old can sit thru a movie?
At what age is it safe to say you won't be walking out the theater with a restless toddler?

Well looks like we will be taking the chance to see if we can survive our first time to the movies as a family.

Happy Friday everyone!

Extreme Hoarder

Posted by Ruby Wright in , , ,

A while ago I had a post titled He carries everything EVERYWHERE! Well It's still happening only this time little man has eased up on the big toys and stuffed animals. Now he's more drawn to small cars, ads, and coupons.

If he sees something he likes whether it's a toy, cartoon character or food product, he keeps the paper and takes it everywhere. I find them all over the house especially near his play area and bed.

Just see the picture above, his newest addition is this coupon that pictures cereal. He's been carrying it around for about 3 days now. I take it from him before bed. He wakes up the next morning looking for it. He usually carries the darn papers or coupons around until they fall apart or i get them trashed.

You would think he's never been given anything special the way he clings to these things. The good side is he's a very easy child to please .

I know i was an ad hoarder as a kid too. My mom still talks about how she would find all of Sunday specials in my room when i was a kid.
But I question if this is normal behavior? Or is Little man just being a kid like i was?

Bloggy Makeover

Posted by Ruby Wright in , ,

Its been a while since i changed the look of GUB. I've decided new season new bloggy makeover.
I think I'm looking for a simpler blog look so perhaps no crazy loud background but I'd still love some bright summery colors around the place.

I've already changed the clothes on little man and little lady. Little man totally picked out what he's wearing much like what he does every morning. He's really into dinos right now so you can always catch him yelling rawr!Little lady just picked out her colors mama did all the rest much like our morning dress time. I did sneak in a little something special can you guess/see what it is? I've also added the color palette of inspiration I've been using to design the new look.

Well i guess i should get back to work lots to design around here. I should be reviling our new look within the next week or so :) stay tuned!

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Toddler & her Tiara

Posted by Ruby Wright in ,

It's no surprise that this momma is a makeup junkie. I guess that stems from having a strict upbringing. When it came to painting my nails and wearing makeup, My dad was always very strict about having my nails painted ONLY clear. I did experiment with makeup later in my teens but never as a little princess wearing all kinds of funky colors. It's not until recent that I've actually started wearing make up more. At first it was more about collecting it rather than wearing it. That sounds terrible doesn't?

Little lady is growing up much different than I did. Dad and I are a little more open to letting her create her own and explore. I guess this could be good and bad. She has definitely become quite the diva around here. Yelling "gay-gups mom" "plesh GAY-GUPS" She loves to see me put make up on and she even hands me brushes out of my kit. It's our new bonding time. It's cute but I'm wondering if I've created a monster.

You see this little princess not only gets occasional pedis by dad on the weekends but she walks around with a little tiara too.

I decided to give her a good taste of what the makeup feels like since we normally just pretend or just add a little blush. I did something I thought as a mom I'd never do. I put eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick on my toddler. She didn't like how it felt and she really looked like one of those toddler and tiara girls. It was pretty scary however this didn't stop her from wanting it after i had removed all the gunk.

I'm afraid to say i have a toddler in her tiara here.

Nail Biting Toddlers

Posted by Ruby Wright in , , , , , ,

Since returning from our trip from Mexico I've noticed little man had a new habit.
He's nail biting. At first i thought nothing of it. Honestly it didn't bother me. I was actually ok with it because for a while he had been exploring his nose. I guess you can say i was relieved the nose poking was a small phase and nail biting didn't seem that extreme. That is until I went to cut his nails and he showed me there was nothing to cut after a month. Little lady has now picked up the habit too.

At first I started with the "No, stop biting your nails" and "get your fingers out of your mouth". Then i realized, had this been me as a child my grandmother would have gone to the extreme of putting chile under our nails or at least threaten to do so in hopes of kicking the habit.

I didn't want to resort to that so as I do with most issues I go online to find reasons or causes for many of the kids behaviours. I had already imagined it might be out of anxiety with all the travel we have been doing. I also imagined it may be a cause of anxiety or stress because whenever little man gets into trouble he immediately starts nail biting. However I couldn't imagine why little lady picked it up. Was it because she saw big brother doing it?

I read on BabyCenter.com
He may be doing it for a number of other, less worrisome reasons — out of curiosity or boredom, to relieve stress, to pass the time, or simply from force of habit.

Most 2-year-olds, however, choose one or a few habits to indulge in (thumb sucking and nose play is a common combination), then eventually give them up without any encouragement. Do your best to ignore the habit, and one day you'll realize it's gone the way of diapers and teething rings

So it just as i imagined not a big deal to stress over unless they start hurting them selves.

The article also mentioned what we could do to help the habit disappear besides waiting and hoping for it to go away.

Keep his hands occupied. If you can pinpoint the times and places when your child's particularly likely to bite his nails — while watching TV, for example, or riding in the car — try giving him substitutes such as finger puppets, a squeezable ball, or a bendable toy to keep his hands busy. Cut his fingernails short, too, so there's nothing to tempt him to bite.

I plan to continue to watch their habit closely and try to keep their little hands very busy. As a result from watching them closely I realized dad also has a habit of biting his nails. Maybe they picked it up from him. In any case I hope this habit goes away soon it has out worn its welcome.

Do /did you have a nail biter?
What did/do you do? How soon did it go away?

At the shore

Posted by Ruby Wright in , , ,

The temperatures have been a little high out in our area. Dad decided to surprise us with a drive down to the shore. We have already visited Atlantic city and walked the boardwalk last year. The kids have never really had the chance to get in the water and play in the sand.
Little man who usually is the one afraid of everything was actually very curious to explore the shore.Little lady not so mush. She hung by my side and held on to my leg every time the tide came in . Overall it was a beautiful day at the Wildwood shore. My little ones had lots to explore.

** I've decided to use costa as a translation for shore after a brief discussion on twitter and research on google**

Happy weekend everyone! Feliz fin de semana a todos!

1st place pickers

Posted by Ruby Wright in , , , ,

If you guessed Strawberry picking from yesterdays post you were right!!!

As a kid I remember going to a park and celebrating strawberry season at a Strawberry Festival. The highlights were always the roller coasters, the carnival games(goldfish were always a prize), and of course the strawberry pies!!! It was never about actually seeing and picking strawberries. Strawberries were just the theme.

Living in New Jersey now, the garden state, Farm land is everywhere much like what California was like when a was a kid. Strawberry Festival had a totally new meaning for me tho. I had never been to a farm to pick fruit off a tree or vine.

Picking strawberries and cherries with the kids was as much fun as it was a life lesson
As we picked, I explained that great relatives like great grandpa use to do this. It is part of us. We are 1st place pickers.

I had never imagined ever going to a strawberry field and actually picking strawberries. I always passed by fields(in California) and saw our Mexican people picking. It is an emotional reminder of what my family has been part of to live the American dream . I can still hear the stories from my grandfather... "Cuando mi papa, tu tio Chon, y yo crusavamos para trabajar en los campos a pescar fresas"...(When my father, my brother Chon and I would cross to work in the fields to get strawberries...) Many of his stories started this way.

It was nice to know i could share this moment with my children. Little man was so happy to see his little baskets of fruit get full. Little lady was so eager to taste the fruit as you can see form the pictures this momma panicked! I know they probably won't remember the first time they picked strawberries but I have pictures to remind them. I hope to make this an annual event.

Everything is better when we're together

Posted by Ruby Wright in , ,

I remember the day I found out I was preggo with little lady. Little man was 4 months old. The hubs and I were excited we always knew we wanted out kids close in age. Maybe not this close but in the end we knew it would all be ok.

Everyone told us how hard it would be. Everyone said how little man would resent her since she was coming so soon. He wouldn't understand what was going on. Money would be tight. It would be HARD!!!

Now that little man is going to be 3 and little lady is going to be 2 it does gets a little chaotic. They scream, fight, and bite sometimes but they can't live without each other. They take turns tormenting daddy and mommy but they are amazing little personalities.

I find them watching TV hugging, playing on the same bed with toys, sharing books. They even hold hands when we are out in public(I think because they see mommy and daddy doing this).

If one of them is ever away the other one is missing them. They are inseparable. They are the Best of Friends and I wouldn't trade them for the world.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Aventuras IN la hora de BATH- Spanish Friday

Posted by Ruby Wright in , ,

Was not too long ago that Little lady was sitting in a “bumbo” scared of being splashed by the water running in the tub with her big brother. Now more time is spent playing and pretending to swim in the tub during bath time. Unfortunately once the bubbles settle and bath time becomes boring they become little curious explorers.

Little man stands and little lady points,“pee-pee” Little man points back “boobs”. At this point I realize, gone are the days where I can multitask and shower them both at the same time. Gone are the days where my little babies will enjoy bath time together. And where did they learn what "pee pee" and "boobs" are? I guess you can say I might have used those words around them at one point.

Little man and little lady are no longer babies they are big kids. They are big kids that communicate and identify their body parts, including those that should be left private. Off I go to teach them what privates are and that it’s best to call them privates.

Little man y Little lady ya no son bebés son niños grandes. Son niños grandes que comunican e identifican sus partes del cuerpo, incluso los que se debe dejar privados. Me voy a enseñarles que son partes privadas y por que es mejor llamar le partes privadas.

Mommy's learning to do my hair...kind of

Posted by Ruby Wright in ,

If there is one thing I'm still trying to conquer that is learning to do my kids hair. Doing their hair doesn't come easy because it's much different then mine or anyone I have ever dealt with. I wrote about this since little man was about a year old here I've also shared about little lady's hair and styling issues.

My easy way out of caring for little man's hair was to shave it off but I can't do that with little lady.

I had my try at braid as I mentioned before and I did get a lot of flack for saying it takes someone gifted to braid hair. I only say that because that is what i felt. After trying braids on me, little man, and little lady i failed miserably.

I have now resorted to hats, ponytails, and puffs. I can at least say I can do that and of course I finally learned to properly detangle their hair with out resorting in tears..well some days little man just doesn't like his hair touched.

Thank goodness for my MIL(Mother in Law) she has braided little man's hair on several occasions and now has even braided little lady's hair Doesn't she look cute?!?

I will continue to learn to do my kids hair I'd appreciate any tips on how to manage style children's hair. I'll be sharing my newly updated hair routine and share with you some products I love to use.

Happy Thursday everyone!

We are back & 1st time Contributor!

Posted by Ruby Wright in ,

We are back safely from our trip to North Carolina. We actually got back late Sunday night. It was really a fast trip just so that my in laws could attend their relatives funeral. Unfortunately I can't say we went on any adventures. The hubs did take some pics of the kiddos which I'll share at a later time. But really no exploring.

Even tho I did have my laptop on hand I failed to blog here. However, Remember I told you about this awesome new family, Multicultural Familia, I'm part of and how I would be contributing to their online Magazine. Well we officially had our Launch Monday! Chantilly, the founder, worked so hard to get this site up and running. I am extremely proud to be part of such a great project!

I found my self relating to many of the contributors that dealt with a lot of the same issues I went thru and am going thru. Issues that deal with stereotypes and identity. I have mentioned many time show strangers and even family have hurt my families feelings by the things they say. Well I wrote a post about my experience in hopes of creating awareness I hope you will go on over to read. Let me know what you think. It's titled Yes,My Son is Black!

Happy Wednesday everyone!
