Before we left Jersey for our little vacay to Cali we went to the Johnson's farm for a little tradition we started last year. We picked strawberries!!!! Strawberries came in early this year, mid May. We enjoyed a nice ride on the hayride and of we went into the sea of green to hunt or super red strawberries.
Just like last year, little lady and little man both tried to eat the berries as soon as they found them. We had to watch them close but little man took the first bite into one when we weren't looking. His shirt told on him and so did the pink line running down his lip.
The kids had so much fun running up and down the fields of berries It was really a great family moment to remember this year. We ended our day with 3 crates of berries and one lonesome radish. The kids were curious to see how we take veggies from under the dirt.
The next day we created this super yummy strawberry smoothie. It was really all by accident. The hubs had put the strawberries in a little sugar to top our ice creams later during the week but it turns out that I had a better plan for them.

With just as little as 4 ingredients the kids and I enjoyed a semi-healthy treat. I was so happy about how delicious our smoothies turned out! They were a total hit with the kids.
Perhaps this will be an add on to our tradition.
Have you gone berry picking yet? Does your family have any spring time traditions?

So much fun! We have been going to strawberry festivals since I was a kid, and we are continuing this tradition with Doll Face. It is one of our favorite things to do. :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't is so much fun to do things with your little ones that we used to do as kids? :)
That looks like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteAww how fun!! I wish we had those in Hawaii. We're lucky if strawberries go on sale. Usually it's $6.00 a tray!! I used to have home grown strawberry patches, but they are little, and the ants always seemed to harvest before we got the chance.
ReplyDeleteI´ve never done that, but would love to pick strawberries. Your kids look like happy. What an experience!
ReplyDeleteYum! Strawberries are so cheap right now too. Have you tried replacing the honey with agave? That tastes pretty delicious too. Oh, and add some cinnamon at the end. :)
ReplyDeleteStrawberries are my kids' favorite fruit, as I just mentioned to someone. I've never been strawberry picking with them, though. Only apple picking. I bet they would love it.Thanks for the idea. I am going to look for a farm in my area.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Ruby! When we were kids our parents took us cherry picking. I still remember it. Kudos to you for exposing your little ones to the joy of locally-grown food.
ReplyDeleteI'll take my daughter next year to the farm. The smoothie looks so good. Thanks for the recipe!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! I want to take my kids strawberry picking someday. We just miss it every year because we get so busy about that time here. We love to make smoothies, too. But we nix the sugar and sweeten with some peaches. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat photos and recipe! So awesome that your kids can experience this.
