Today we continue with our celebration of our Mexican culture. I decided to teach the kids a little more about Mexican Independence Day and thought I'd share some useful facts relating to this day.
1-Father Miguel Hidalgo, a Roman Catholic Priest, rallied the town people of Dolores, Guanajuato on September 15, 1810 to give them the speech known today as El Grito de Dolores (The Cry of Dolores).
2-El Grito de Dolores consisted of Father Hidalgo ringing the bell of El Palacio Nacional. He shouted important war hero's names followed by Viva Mexico & Viva la Independencia
3-Traveling throughout Mexico Father Hidalgo had a following of nearly 90,000 poor farmers and Mexican civilians united to rebel against the Spanish rule. Father Hidalgo was eventually captured and killed in 1811.
4-They were fighting for freedom from Spaniards after being forced into slavery more than 300 years later.
5- It took 11 years to defeat the Spaniards. The war for Independence was won in 1821 However it is celebrated on September 16.
We colored a pictures of Father Hidalgo to help explain to the kids who was the leader and why he led the people to freedom. We also discussed what he used to rally the town and what he shouted! VIVA MEXICO!

Father Hidalgo. Let's see if I can remember that. *lol* I won't even tell you what I said the first time I heard my mom mention "El Grito." Very cute, Amiga. :-)
