I find it important to celebrate everyday occasions, especially culture related, with the kids now that they are old enough to understand. With Hispanic Heritage in full swing, we talk about the foods I ate as a kid and the foods they now eat that are part of the Mexican culture.
I always try and teach them about my grandparents, their great-grandparents, who have now passed. It was so fitting to bake a cake after our discussion this week and with Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, around the corner. What better way to remember my grandparents, then with a Candy Sugar Skull Cake to get the celebration started!
We headed to our local Walmart to pick up some of the ingredients we needed to get our cake dessert started! Our first stop was frosting so we stopped by and picked up the new Cool Whip frosting. They had 2 flavors Dutch Chocolate and Vanilla in the freezer section.
Little Lady wanted a yummy vanilla cake so we chose the new Cool Whip Frosting in Vanilla. She then choose dad’s favorite, yellow cake mix. I secretly wished we were getting the butter pecan flavor I had seen… maybe next time.
Little Man was in charge of the candy topping we would use to create our Sugar Skull decor.
He picked some of our favorites; Mike and Ikes, Reese’s PB cups, Nerds, and Hershey Kisses!
All great choices for the eyes, teeth, and swirly decoration the sugar skull will need.
Our cake ingredients came out to $10.30 so technically our cake cost less than $15 since we already had the oil and eggs at home! Score!

Once we got home from our shopping trip to Walmart, we started our cake batter. We quickly got started on our candy assembly line since it was getting a little late. We soon had our cake baking and were waiting for it took cool off. Little Lady was pooped half way through the separation of candy! She called it a night on our kitchen table!
I was left to decorate the cake myself which was OK because in the morning it was the perfect surprise for the kids!
When it was time to frost the cake, I was super amazed with the consistency of the frosting. I used maybe 2/3 of the frosting I was excited to have some left over. I started designing my Sugar Skull placing the candies on top of the frosting. I loved that it held them in place.
Since this was my first time using Cool Whip Frosting I wasn’t sure if refrigerating the cake would create the frosting to harden. I refrigerated the cake uncovered and hoped for the best.
The next morning the kids were excited to see their cake. I was happy to see the frosting was still as creamy and fluffy as I had originally left it in the refrigerator and the candy design was still in tact! I cut the cake and it was still nice and moist! Perfect if you ask me!
We enjoyed our cake and talked about our upcoming celebration of great grandma and grandpa during Day of the Dead! I like to think they were present in spirit because our pictures had this odd white spot in them.
It was the perfect celebration in our everyday life.
